What is PRP, and Where Should I Use it?

PRP Therapy and Its Uses

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a medical procedure that utilizes a concentration of platelets from a person’s blood to promote healing and tissue regeneration.

Blood Collection

A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn, typically from the arm. This is like at your doctor’s office, where we use a tourniquet and put a band-aid on afterward. If we cannot use the arm at the elbow, there are other areas where we can collect blood. Front Door Medspa has an ultrasound and a vein light to help guide us on difficult blood draws.

Centrifugation

The collected blood is processed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins at high speeds. This process separates the blood into different components, with the platelet-rich plasma being isolated.  Platelet-rich plasma is gold in color, so it’s not gross as you might have imagined or seen pictures of with red blood smeared on your skin. It looks clear when applied to the skin.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Extraction

The platelet-rich plasma, which contains a higher concentration of platelets than normal blood, is extracted and prepared for use. Front Door Medspa uses an FDA-approved centrifuge and collection kit, so our platelet yield is very high. We affectionately call PRP Liquid GOLD because we love to add it to any skin resurfacing, and we have had remarkable results with scars, stretch marks, and more.

Injection or Application

The PRP is then injected or applied to the targeted area requiring treatment, such as joints, tendons, or the skin.

Release of Growth Factors

Platelets contain growth factors and bioactive proteins that play a crucial role in the body’s healing process. When PRP is applied to a specific area, the growth factors release signals, which recruit stem cells, unlocking your healing power.

Stimulation of Cell Regeneration

The released growth factors stimulate cell proliferation, tissue repair, and regeneration in the treated area.  This can include nerve tissue, blood vessels, fat cells, or any other cell it touches.

Enhanced Healing

PRP accelerates the body’s natural healing processes, promoting faster recovery from injuries, reducing inflammation, and improving overall tissue health.  It can induce healing and regeneration in an area not injured, but rather just degrading, as in the case of erectile tissue or stress incontinence where there is not a frank injury.  In cases of lichen sclerosis, psoriasis, and other dermatologic conditions, it can change the reactions of the unhealthy cells or reduce the unhealthy cells by recruiting healthy ones.

Other Uses of PRP Therapy Beyond Med Spa Applications

PRP is commonly applied to gums for periodontal healing and implant success,  as well as joint and other orthopedic conditions.  These applications are even covered by insurance because the research and data are so overwhelming.  Other applications of PRP include dermatology: wound healing, lichen sclerosis, psoriasis, scars, stretch marks, and anti-aging of tissues including nerve, vascular and erectile tissue, and muscles like the pelvic floor.

PRP Therapy: A Modern Med Spa Treatment

While PRP has shown success in various medical fields and is expanding,  its efficacy can vary depending on the specific condition and individual responses. A person’s age and overall health may decrease effectiveness.  Consulting with an experienced healthcare professional at our Rochester, MI, office is crucial to determine the suitability of PRP therapy for a particular situation.

New data is being published on adipocyte stem cells, baby stem cells from your fat.  Umbilical stem cells from donated umbilical cords are also an advancing practice.  It’s an exciting time in regenerative medicine and longevity science! Call 248-413-5835 to learn more!
