Myth 1: “A ‘Base Tan’ Protects You from Sunburn and Damage.”

hyperpigmentation on a black womanMany people believe that getting a “base tan,” whether from sun exposure or a tanning bed, prepares their skin for more sun and prevents burning.

Any tan is a sign of sun damage. When your skin darkens, it’s reacting to harmful UV radiation by producing melanin as a defense mechanism. This damage accumulates over time, increasing your risk of premature aging (like wrinkles and sunspots) and serious skin concerns. Instead of seeking a base tan, focus on protecting your skin from the start.

Myth 2: “You Only Need Sunscreen on Sunny Days.”

It’s easy to think that if the sun isn’t shining brightly, your skin is safe. Especially here in Michigan, where summer days can be partly cloudy.

UV rays can penetrate clouds. Up to 80% of the sun’s UV radiation can reach your skin even on overcast days. These rays are responsible for damage, regardless of whether you feel the sun’s heat. Furthermore, UV rays can reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and even concrete, increasing your exposure. Make applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.

Myth 3: “Higher SPF Means You Don’t Need to Reapply Sunscreen.”

Many assume that if they use an SPF 50 or higher, they’re set for the entire day, but this isn’t always the case.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) primarily measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. While a higher SPF offers slightly more protection, the difference between SPF 30 (blocking about 97% of UVB) and SPF 50 (blocking about 98%) is minimal. The most crucial factor is consistent reapplication. Sunscreen wears off due to sweating, swimming, toweling, and general activity. You should reapply broad-spectrum sunscreen at least every two hours, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating, regardless of the SPF number.

Myth 4: “You Don’t Need to Moisturize if Your Skin is Oily in Summer.”

With increased humidity and sweat in Michigan summers, people with oily skin might skip moisturizer, thinking it will make their skin even oilier or cause breakouts.

All skin types, including oily skin, need hydration. When oily skin is stripped of moisture (perhaps by harsh cleansers or by skipping moisturizer), it can actually produce more oil to compensate, leading to a vicious cycle of oiliness and potential breakouts. The key is to choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizer, such as a gel-based or oil-free formula.

Myth 5: “Makeup with SPF is Enough Sun Protection.”

It’s tempting to rely solely on your foundation or tinted moisturizer with SPF for sun defense.

While makeup with SPF offers some protection, it’s rarely enough. To achieve the SPF listed on the product, you would need to apply a much thicker layer than most people typically use. Additionally, makeup can move, smudge, or wear off, leaving areas of your face unprotected. Think of makeup with SPF as an added bonus to your primary sunscreen, not a replacement.

Myth 6: “You Can’t Get Sunburned Through Windows or in the Car.”

Enjoying the sun from indoors or on a drive through Oakland County might seem safe.

Diamond glow facials in Rochester, MIWhile most car windows block UVB rays (which cause sunburn), they typically don’t block UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer. This is why you might notice more sun damage on the left side of your face (if you’re a frequent driver in the US).

Myth 7: “Darker Skin Tones Don’t Need Sunscreen.”

This dangerous myth can lead to significant skin health issues.

All skin tones, regardless of melanin content, are susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer. While darker skin tones have more natural protection, they can still burn, develop sunspots, and are at risk for skin cancer. The signs of sun damage or skin cancer can also be harder to detect in darker skin, often leading to later diagnosis. Sunscreen is essential for everyone, every day.
